Intensive Care Foundation is dedicated to improving the care of critically ill patients by raising funds for clinical research projects and the education of health professionals responsibile for intensive care. Research focuses on improving our understanding and treatment of four critical areas: lung injury, brain injury, sepsis and prevention of critical illness in hospitalised patients.
In November 2001, the Councils of Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) and Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) agreed to form the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, responsible for all intensive care training and certification in Australia and New Zealand.
The Nepean Hospital Department of Intensive Care Medicine is part of the teaching facilities of the University of Sydney Western Clinical School. The Department is very active in teaching and research. The Nepean Critical Care Academic Unit is a centralized unit within the Department managing and monitoring all research activities.
